About Me
I have worked in the natural resources management field for about 17 years. I was an Army engineer officer for about 4 years previous to my current job, and I received bachelor’s and master’s of science degrees in Natural Resources Management from the University of Alaska.
Briefly share what you do as part of your job
I manage the operation and maintenance of a large concrete dam on the Genesee River in western New York. The dam is designed to reduce the risk of major flooding for downstream communities, including the City of Rochester. I also manage the 3800 acres of forests, meadows, wetlands, and riverine area associated with the dam.
What Inspired You to Explore STEM?
I have always loved recreating in the great outdoors! Hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping were some of my favorite activities. I love learning about ecosystems and the complex interaction of plants and animals with their surroundings.
What Do You Enjoy Most About Your STEM Career?
The diversity! Some days I might be kayaking down the river performing riparian surveys, other days I might be analyzing data and making decisions about future natural resource management plans. I also enjoy interacting with the public in a visitor center or during outreach events.
What is a STEM fact about your field?
Many people may be surprised that the Army has scientists, natural resources managers, and park rangers working for them! In fact the Army Corps of Engineers is the leading provider of water-based recreational opportunity in the U.S.
