About Me

Meghan is a mining engineer who has worked in the mining industry for over 15 years. Meghan has used computer software to create 3D models of mines, figuring out where to drill and blast the rock safely. She was also a superintendent who managed crews of underground miners, making sure they are doing their jobs safely and following the plans. Now, she helps teams at mines around the world get better at what they do, and shares these improvements with company leaders and investors.

Briefly share what you do as part of your job

Meghan has worked at mine sites for most of her career (with miners, geologists, engineers, managers, accountants, mechanics, etc.), but now works from home and travels to mine sites or meets virtually with people from all around the world by video call. She uses computer software like 3D design software, spreadsheets and online dashboards.

What Inspired You to Explore STEM?

As a kid, I was interested in everything from dinosaur bones to designing my ideal bedroom to designing technology like I saw on Star Trek! My hobbies included sewing and baking, so I learned very quickly how important math and chemistry were, whether making myself clothes or making a birthday cake!

What Do You Enjoy Most About Your STEM Career?

I enjoy being able to solve problems as a team. As a mining engineering, I am often working with teams of very smart people to try to figure out how to mine valuable materials safely, quickly, efficiently, at the lowest cost and with the least impact on the environment – which can be quite a challenge!

What is a STEM fact about your field?

The average modern electronic device (like your phone, tablet, computer, TV, etc.) has more than 35 minerals in it – and all of these come from mining!
