About Me

My name is Garrett Marietta, I am a 28 year old geologist living in Bloomington, Indiana. I have a wife, dog, and soon will have a daughter too! I was the first in my family to go to college which was really exciting but also really scary for me. After I finished school I was a research scientist for a university but left that so I could help people deal with their problems faster.

Briefly share what you do as part of your job

For my job I work both in my own office and sometimes I get to work outside! I use computers for writing and coding, compasses and special water equipment when I’m working outside, and always so much math! I meet with a lot of people who have water wells for their homes, and people who help make sure there is enough water for those without wells.

What Inspired You to Explore STEM?

I always loved math, it’s been my favorite subject since I was in 1st grade (my 1st grade teacher called me a mathematician!) So when I got older and had to decide what I wanted to study, I started looking at people who got to use math a lot, which led me to scientists. Geology was the best science to me because I got to use all the sciences!

What Do You Enjoy Most About Your STEM Career?

I enjoy that I get to help people solve problems that they care about. I help figure out how much water they have and where it is so that no one goes without ever. I also like that I learn something new every day, I feel like I get smarter just by doing my job! Right now I get to help the town that I’m from figure out these problems too!

What is a STEM fact about your field?

When I worked as a research scientist, I did work that involved figuring out how old beach sand was! Also, I’ve held a rock that was over 1 billion years old (not related to the beach sand).
