About Me
Hi! My name is Abby. I’m from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but Denver has been my home for the last five years. I went to college at Penn State (not too far from where I’m from) and studied architectural engineering, which taught me how to design and build buildings. I work in construction and use a lot of cool technology to help build different types of buildings – anything from hotels to apartments to office buildings. In my free time, I like to hike with my dog, golf, and ski.
Briefly share what you do as part of your job
I use technology (computer programs, drones, virtual reality, etc.) to help construct buildings. I support the people who are building the project to make sure that everything is done correctly and efficiently. I usually work in the office with a few different small teams, but sometimes I am on site around the Denver area or in the mountains.
What Inspired You to Explore STEM?
When I was growing up, I always enjoyed building things like miniature log cabins or toy rollercoaster sets. In school, my favorite subject was math and I liked solving problems. I took a class in high school to learn how to model buildings in 3D on the computer, which helped grow my interest in architecture and encouraged me to explore STEM.
What Do You Enjoy Most About Your STEM Career?
I like getting to see big projects come to life and knowing that I played a role in that. I also like getting to work with a variety of people in my company and other companies. I enjoy having a mix of time working with technology in the office and visiting the projects to see them in-person and help solve problems. It is challenging but fun!
What is a STEM fact about your field?
One cool thing that we do in my field is fly drones! Drones are kind of like mini remote-controlled planes. We use drones to take pictures and videos of the projects that we are working on. The drones also collect information about the building that can be used to make sure everything was built the right way.
